Volvo Sets the Standard for Safety Innovation

In the 1950s, Swedish inventor Nils Bohlin introduced the modern three-point seatbelt for Volvo cars, revolutionizing automotive safety as we know it. In 1959, what was once an available option became standard equipment, eventually saving millions of lives. A patent was granted for the design, which Volvo promptly gave away, allowing other manufacturers to implement the design, helping to mitigate severe injuries in car accidents worldwide.

A pioneer of automotive safety, Volvo has made that focus one of its core values since 1927. Today, Volvo has expanded that focus, with a new vision for zero fatalities or serious injuries in a new Volvo. From high-strength steel construction and advanced airbag systems to cutting-edge driver-assistance technologies, Volvo sedans, wagons, and SUVs deliver control, convenience, and peace of mind.

Safety Cage Construction

Volvo safety begins with intelligent construction. Made from hot-formed high-strength steel, Volvo frames form a safety cage around the occupants. That cage provides maximum force-distribution and occupant protection in every impact scenario. Furthermore, an array of airbags throughout out the cabin provide an extra cushion for occupants. This includes driver, passenger, and full-length side-curtain airbags. Finally, Volvo designed its seats to absorb excess energy by mechanically deforming during an impact. This can help reduce serious spine injuries during a hard landing.

Future-Focused Technology

IntelliSafe Standard

While advanced construction techniques provide physical protection in the event of a crash, Volvo's advanced driver-assistance technologies aim to prevent accidents before they happen. Volvo's IntelliSafe features provide steering assist and brake support to supplement your attentive driving. Helping to detect and avoid hazards, the most critical of these systems are standard equipment on every Volvo model. IntelliSafe Standard features include:

  • Volvo City Safety combines forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking technologies. It monitors the road ahead and warns of an impending impact or if the driver is following too closely. It can apply emergency braking force if the driver is unable to respond in time.

  • Lane Keeping Aid helps keep the vehicle from unintentionally straying for its lane.

  • Run-off Road Mitigation can reduce the risk of road departure.

  • Oncoming Lane Mitigation warns if you have crossed the lane markings and can automatically steer back into your lane if no action is taken.

  • Automatic high beam control automatically adjusts high beams to account for low-light situations and oncoming traffic.

IntelliSafe Surround

Standard on some models and available on all, IntelliSafe Surround features monitor all around the vehicle, providing information about vehicles or objects in your vicinity.

  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information) with steer assist helps you safely change lanes by monitoring for and warning of vehicles in your blind spot.

  • Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake monitors for vehicles approaching from either side when backing out of a parking space.

  • Rear Collision Warning calculates the risk of collision of vehicles approaching from behind. If a collision appears imminent, the system quickly flashes the hazard lights to warn the approaching driver. It also primes the brakes and tensions the seatbelts automatically if a collision can't be avoided.

IntelliSafe Assist

IntelliSafe Assist systems can help reduce driving fatigue on longer journeys and enable a more relaxed and controlled driving experience.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control augments standard cruise functionality by automatically maintaining a preset distance from leading vehicles. The system slows down and speeds up with the flow of traffic, reducing the need to switch between brake and accelerator.

  • Volvo Pilot Assist supplements Adaptive Cruise Control with steering assistance to keep the Volvo centered in its lane. Second generation Pilot Assist does not require a leading vehicle to function.
